COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Operation Christmas Child has sent over 232 million shoebox gifts since 1993 to children in more than 170 countries and hosted a workshop Thursday in Bowling Green that featured Marvellos Okonee’s story and set a goal of 22,500 boxes for this year. Last year, 21,200 boxes were packed locally—national collection is scheduled for Nov. 17—24.  WBKO
  • On September 4, a Micronesian family in Bowling Green lost their home and 4-year-old child in a house fire on Loving Way and two local groups are helping with expenses—Cone Funeral Home is waiving service fees while Holy Spirit Catholic Church provides food and clothing. Donations may be dropped off at Cone Funeral Home at 1510 Campbell Lane or Holy Spirit at 4754 Smallhouse Road.  WNKY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Octagon Hall—built by Andrew Jackson Caldwell with special Masonic symbols—served as a field hospital for thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War and sheltered hidden troops during key battles. After years as a rental property, the home was turned into a museum by the Octagon Hall Foundation and now draws visitors interested in history and ghost tours.  WBKO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WKU Rec Club held a relaunch event on Sept. 11 outside Regents and Normal Halls with lawn games such as corn hole, Kanjam and giant Jenga—students enjoyed the new start and the club plans a volunteering event at Mammoth Cave National Park on Sept. 21.  College Heights Herald
  • Today at Legacy Christian Academy in Bowling Green, educators held a 9/11 remembrance service to honor the 2,977 people killed in the terrorist attacks and to explain the event's importance to students who did not experience it. Principal Jerry Giffard said the service teaches about sacrifice and honors local heroes— reinforcing the need to remember history.  WNKY
  • Students at Logan County High School held a remembrance walk where they walked or ran around the track 2,977 times for every name lost on 9/11—honoring those who died in the tragic event.  WBKO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bowling Green Police and WKU ROTC students held a series of exercises—honoring the lives lost on 9/11—to remember those who died 24 years ago.  WBKO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bowling Green residents are urged to get a flu shot in September to early October to guard against the flu because the CDC estimates there were at least 24,000 flu deaths last season and the number could be higher with full data. Dr. Andrew Hartley at Graves-Gilbert said the shot may cause mild symptoms as the immune system builds protection — these can be managed with over-the-counter medicine.  WNKY
  • Bowling Green is hosting its annual Out of the Darkness Walk on Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m. at the Ballpark to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention & offer a community event featuring a bead ceremony, food trucks, and family activities that honor those lost and support survivors.  WKYU-FM

  • Developer SOCAYR closed on properties in Bowling Green, Mayfield, and Dawson Springs to build 294 rental units for the nearly 1,000-unit regional housing project as announced by Gov. Andy Beshear last Thursday — construction is expected to begin in the coming months.  WNKY
