ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A head-on collision occurred Saturday evening on I-65 near mile marker 15 when a 1998 Cadillac driven by Garland Johnson (80) struck a 2017 Jaguar operated by Mesa Reinier (36), with Johnson pronounced dead at the scene and Reinier airlifted to a Nashville hospital.  WBKO

CRIME NEWS

  • The Daily News revisited its three-part series on the 1948 murders at Murder Mansion — the series and follow-up book continue to draw interest from local true crime readers and clubs with an upcoming discussion at Lexington Public Library. The paper also introduced a new design that received positive reviews on Wednesday — minor issues remain as editors work to refine the update.  Bowling Green Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Downtown Bowling Green was in decline until the TIF district spurred nearly $450 million in investments since 2008 that turned many old spaces into new local projects—like Bowling Green Ballpark—and will run until 2037.   • Johnny’s Red Storm, co-owned by John Cronin Jr. and Rick Pitino and ridden by Frankie Dettori, won the $1 million Kentucky Downs Juvenile Sprint yesterday — the colt led the race from start to finish and finished two lengths ahead of Obliteration.  Bowling Green Daily News
  • At Kentucky Downs in Franklin on August 31, trainer Rodolphe Brisset’s filly Meringue won a four-horse photo finish in the $1 million Juvenile Fillies race—jockey Luan Machado stayed on to secure a head victory over Red Beretta. Meringue earned $586,750 and showed promise on both turf and dirt for upcoming races.  Bowling Green Daily News
  • The Bowling Green Hot Rods lost 9—3 to the Greenville Drive on Sunday at Fluor Field in Greenville. The team has an off day today and will start a six—game series at home on Tuesday against the Asheville Tourists.  Bowling Green Daily News
  • On Saturday, WKU beat North Alabama 55—6 at Houchens-Smith Stadium, led by quarterback Maverick McIvor who threw for 305 yards and five touchdowns while the defense stopped all scoring. The win improved WKU’s season record to 2-0 and set up a road game at Toledo on Sept. 6.  WNKY
  • Western Kentucky women's soccer beat Union 5-1 on Sunday night at the WKU Soccer Complex—freshman Makenna Egan led with two goals and an assist while three teammates also scored, moving the team to a 3-2-0 record.  Bowling Green Daily News
  • On Saturday, Wimbledon Hawkeye won the $3.5 million G3 DK Horse Nashville Derby at Kentucky Downs by a head over Burnham Square. The British 3-year-old left Sunday morning for his flight back to England—earning jockey Frankie Dettori his second consecutive Derby win.  Bowling Green Daily News
