  • The Bowling Green Police Department surprised longtime crossing guard Betty Natcher with a bouquet of flowers and gifts on Wednesday morning, August 13 as students arrived for the first day of school at Potter Gray Elementary—she began as a school patrol officer in 1977.  Bowling Green Daily News
  • Puppetry nonprofit Kids on the Block is hosting the Points for Puppets Tennis Tournament on Aug 16 and Aug 17 at Kereiakes Park and Buchanon Park Tennis Complex to raise funds for its education and prevention work. The event, presented by Foundation Solutions Group and Parker Lord, will draw about 200 tennis players — volunteers are still needed.  WBKO
  • Over 180,000 Bowling Green families are eligible to receive $120 per child in grocery benefits through the Summer EBT program—an effort by Feeding Kentucky and Kentucky Kids Eat to help parents as school is out; applications must be submitted by August 15.  WNKY
  • Bowling Green welcomes the new Bambino Buddy Ball League that will launch later this year and offers baseball for children and young adults ages 5 to 20 with physical and intellectual disabilities who will be paired with volunteer buddies. The league aims to build inclusion and teamwork and has already earned support from local sponsors including Bowling Green Hot Rods, Bluegrass Dedicated, Upward Behavior, and American Home Builders.  WNKY

  • Wawa began construction for its first Bowling Green location during a groundbreaking event—featuring local officials and free samples. The company plans to open five stores by the end of 2025 as part of its expansion to 40 locations across the state.  WBKO

  • Kentucky State Police are asking residents for help finding 44-year-old Erica Northern—who is 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes—wanted for first-degree possession of a controlled substance with her last seen locations in Bowling Green and Springfield, Tennessee.  WNKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials propose to keep property taxes unchanged for 2025 and will hold a public hearing at City Hall’s commission chamber at 4:30 p.m. Aug 19—CFO Katie Schaller-Ward said the real estate tax rate remains at $0.204 per $100 while the personal property rate stays at $0.260 per $100.  Bowling Green Daily News
  • Bowling Green Municipal Utilities announced that Alison Sexton will be the new Chief Financial Officer on Sept. 1 as Holly Vaughn retires. Sexton began her career at BGMU in 2003 and holds an accounting degree from Western Kentucky University—she is a Certified Public Accountant.  WBKO

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Heartland AMBUCS chapter presented a custom adaptive tricycle to 4-year-old Richard Abend at T.C. Cherry Elementary after three weeks of intensive therapy improved his movement. His ride, funded by family and local donors, lets him use his upper body strength to start pedaling and join his classmates in play.  Bowling Green Daily News
