- ➤ Dr. Newton Thomas taught and coached in Horse Cave before becoming the first African American teacher at Caverna Independent High. He led consecutive Negro League championships in the 1940s and helped ease school integration (a key milestone celebrated during Black History Month) in the area. WNKY
